FROM one side of the world to another, Jinja Safari’s debut album takes the listener on a journey across the seas.

Released in May, the self-titled record features 12 postcards from a fantastical pop world, showcasing African, Indian and indie-inspired sounds.

Spearheaded by frontman Marcus Azon and his collaborator Pepa Knight, Jinja Safarihas been described as indie pop at its best: wild and free.

“We really wanted to make this album a bit more special,” Knight said.

“We wanted to go to the places we had been inspired by for so long and get inspiration. It all happened pretty organically.”

Over the past 18 months, Azon and Knight travelled to India, Cambodia, Indonesia, the UK, the US, Germany and Canada and Uganda for inspiration.

Featuring tribal beats, dual drums, and storytelling from across the globe, Knight said he hoped the album captured the same exciting feeling he experienced overseas.

“You listen to these songs and melodies and they don’t make sense to the western ear,” Knight said.

“They have these half, semi tones that we’re not used to hearing and these complicated beats – it’s just phenomenal and really inspiring.

“But people don’t have to travel to listen to these sounds, they can just listen to our album. We really want people to listen to our music and escape. That’s the idea.”

Handpicked by triple j Unearthed in 2010 to play Splendour In The Grass, Jinja Safari (rounded out by drummer Jacob Borg, bassist Joe Citizen and Alister Roach on percussion) blasted onto the scene over three years ago and they’ve never looked back.

Having graced festival bills such as the Big Day Out, Falls, Southbound and Bestival (UK), as well as enjoying sold-out club shows across the country as well as London, New York, the band has quickly made a name for itself worldwide.

Jinja Safari will perform at Karova Lounge this weekend.
