Safety expo a big hit at Narooma: Gallery

NAROOMA’S MonthlyRotary Markets had an extra attraction last weekend, with local volunteerrescue and emergency services setting up displays and demonstrations with thetheme of “Keeping Safe over Summer”.

With the surflifesaving season commencing on the weekend and bushfire danger periodsunderway since the beginning of the month, the safety expo was a timelyreminder to be prepared for all types of emergencies over the warmer months.

Agenciesparticipating included Narooma VRA, Narooma Marine Rescue, Fire & RescueNSW, Narooma RFS and Narooma Surf Life-saving Club.

Red Crosscombined with the SES to present the generic “Rediplan”, which is importantcommunity information, for any type of emergency, as Red Cross are the primarydisaster relief agency around the globe.

Highlightsincluded a fat and oil fire simulation executed by Fire & Rescue NSW, asolemn and confronting reminder, that oil and water don’t mix, as wasdemonstrated with the fatal kitchen fire in Brisbane earlier this week.

Kids flocked tothe RFS smoke house, complete with fire fighters in breathing apparatus andclambered over the surf club “duck” and saw rescue equipment from the VRA andMarine Rescue.

“The event wasgreat example of everyone working together” said this year’s expo coordinatorGilly Kearney.

“It would nothave been possible without the support of Narooma Rotary and the enthusiasm andtrust of all the participating agencies,” she said.

“It’s a great wayto get our various messages out to the public in a community setting, where thecommunity is.”
